What Drives Your CPM

CPM is mostly a function of how narrow your targeting is. The tighter the audience, the more advertisers are bidding for the same people.

Broad

One location, or one audience

$2 - $4
Focused

A location plus one audience

$5 - $9
Layered

Several audiences across several locations

$12 - $18

Your CPM: $5.00

Typical of focused targeting — a location combined with an audience.

Why layering costs more

Every filter you add shrinks the pool of people you are allowed to reach, and you are bidding against every other advertiser who wants that same slice. Scarcity raises the price.

A higher CPM is not automatically worse. Paying $15 to reach people who actually convert beats paying $3 to reach people who never will — what matters is cost per result, not cost per impression.

Buying audiences: what you are really paying for

A CPM is rarely one cost. When you move past “show this to everyone in Omaha” and start buying defined audiences, you are stacking several charges into a single number — which is why the same creative can run at three dollars or fifteen.

The media

The impression itself — the actual placement in front of a person. On broad targeting this is nearly all of your CPM.

The data

Third-party audience segments are licensed, and they carry their own cost per thousand on top of the media. Stack three segments and you have paid for three.

The platform

The demand-side platform that buys the inventory takes a cut, and generally comes with minimum commitments.

How we buy it

We run programmatic through Choozle, which sits on top of The Trade Desk— the same inventory the large agencies buy, without the agency retainer attached to it.

That gets you audience data, cross-device reach and real inventory quality that you cannot get from boosting a post. It is genuinely a better tool, and we will say plainly that it carries real cost: platform fees, data fees, and minimum spends that make it the wrong answer for a very small budget.

Below roughly a few thousand a month, you are better served putting the money into search and social where there is no data or platform layer to pay for. Above it, the targeting starts paying for itself — and the number to judge it on is cost per lead, not the CPM.
